Advice & Tips

Top Tips

Year 11

First top tip – concentrate on your GCSEs. The most important thing right now is to do well in what you’re currently studying. Focus on revision, taking past papers and understanding why the answers are what they are. Second top tip – don’t drift into what comes next. Take the time to research your options and see where it could take you. Take a look at your Career Cloud and see what routes there are into your dream job. Then get back to your GCSEs!

You may think that it’s too early to be thinking about university – you haven’t even finished your GCSEs yet. But the choices you make next can have an enormous impact on what degree you can study later. Look at the A level match tool and see how the cloud changes with your choice of subjects – do this even if you’re not going to take A levels. Then click on the results and see what the popular subjects were for any degree course.

Year 12

As you finish the first term of your new studies, it’s not too early to be thinking about what comes next. There are literally thousands of options open to you. Have another go on the Career Quiz. See what your personalised cloud results suggest. Then start clicking and bookmarking anything that looks interesting, and you can come back to it later.

Your journey into university starts now! There are many things needed to get your place on your dream course. Your qualifications are just the start. The right experience, evidence of your skills set and what your teachers think of you all count too! Year 12 is the perfect time to start doing things and getting involved in activities that will boost your application.

Year 13

Whether you’re looking to start a degree next year, find a job or study and work in an apprenticeship, the most important thing you can do is research your options thoroughly. Make a list of what you want to do and then find out everything you can about it. Start with your personalised clouds and get clicking!

If you’re applying to UCAS this year, remember that you don’t have to apply for all 5 of your choices at once. If you’ve only found 4 courses you want to do, you can send the form off and always add another choice later through Track. And if right now you don’t feel like going at all, don’t forget that you can always apply after you get your grades in the summer through UCAS Clearing. Last year over 70,000 students got a place in Clearing
